Alma Mater vs. Alma Mater

This Saturday, my Alma Mater plays host to Sacramento State, my Dad's Alma Mater, for the opening day of college football. I've just found out that KGO streams their broadcasts live so I'm looking forward to listening to Joe Starkey call the game. It's not exactly the same as listening to the game from my car but it'll be a nice dose of Bay Area life out here in NY.

It's a strange turn of events for Cal to be on the winning side of an impending blowout. I remember just a few years ago, sitting in the lodge of a Michigan dude ranch (a whole other story altogether), watching the season opener against Illinois sharing beers with a Fighting Illini alumnus. Unfortunately, there's not really much excitement in watching Illinois steamroll the Bears on their way to a 44-17 victory.

But now that the sun shines a little brighter on the Golden Bears football program, come Saturday afternoon, when that game-ending whistle blows, I'll probably give my Dad a call to talk some trash about how the Bears just steamrolled his Alma Mater. Of course, my Dad's not much of a football fan and I'm not sure the words "school spirit" have ever come out of his mouth so much of that trash talking will be lost on him. Either way, it'll feel good.
